Good evening! This time, I’m sharing a travel diary of my 3-day trip to Hakodate, Hokkaido! It was my first time in Hakodate, and the trip was packed with charm.
Day 1: From Tokyo to Hakodate, Enjoying Night Views and Seafood!
I departed from Haneda Airport, and after about an hour and 20 minutes on the plane, I arrived at Hakodate Airport a little after 2 PM. (Actually, I managed to get the tickets a bit cheaper by taking advantage of a JAL sale in early February!)
From the airport, it took about 30 minutes by bus to get to Hakodate Station. I checked in at “Hotel Global View Hakodate.” The hotel has natural hot springs and is conveniently located near the station. The room I reserved had a microwave and a kitchenette, making it suitable for long stays rather than just a hotel.

After dropping off my luggage, I strolled around the Motomachi area of Hakodate. I enjoyed the view of the harbor from Hachimanzaka and visited the “Hakodate Orthodox Church Resurrection Cathedral.” The historic buildings were beautiful and full of exotic charm.

After that, I took the Hakodateyama Ropeway to Mount Hakodate. I aimed to go up around 5 PM, just as the sun was setting. Watching the night view gradually light up as the sun went down was truly breathtaking! There’s also a cafe-restaurant inside the observation deck. Even in March, the nights on Mount Hakodate can be extremely cold, so a thick coat is essential. The best spots for taking photos can get crowded and require waiting in line, so it’s best to go with some extra time to spare.

For dinner, I went to “Nebokke” and enjoyed delicious fatty hokke and fresh seafood with Sapporo Classic beer, ending the first night in Hakodate perfectly.

Day 2: From the Morning Market to Goryokaku, Food Tour and Historical Exploration
The second day started with a visit to the Hakodate Morning Market. The main attraction was, of course, a seafood bowl! I indulged in a bowl topped generously with sea urchin, salmon roe, and crab, feeling luxurious from the morning. I also enjoyed the famous squid noodles!

Next, I visited the “Hakodate City Museum” located in Hakodate Park. The first-floor exhibits provided an extensive display about the Great Fire of Hakodate that occurred in 1934. On the second floor, I could explore the history and culture of Hakodate from the Jomon period onward, taking my time to thoroughly observe the exhibits.
After that, I strolled around the red brick warehouse area and enjoyed Kaitakushi beer at “Hakodate Beer Hall.” The retro atmosphere of the warehouse district further enhanced the travel mood.

For lunch, I had Hakodate’s famous shio ramen at the nearby “Ajisai.” I was impressed by the elegant taste of the clear broth.

And then, off to the must-visit tourist spot, Goryokaku! First, I wandered around the Goryokaku ruins.

Afterwards, I climbed the tower and enjoyed the beautiful star-shaped scenery from above.

The gelato from MILKISSIMO inside the tower was also exquisite!

In the evening, I enjoyed sushi at “Kaitenzushi Shunka.” The fresh local ingredients were so irresistible that I ended up eating more than I planned. (There was a bit of a wait, but since there were many seats and it’s a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, I was seated in less than an hour!)

Day 3: Wrapping Up the Trip with Café Time and Lucky Pierrot
On the final day, I visited Motomachi Park and the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall. The view from the hall’s balcony was stunning. I spent a relaxing time admiring the historic buildings.

I also visited “Hakodate Motomachi Coffee Shop” on Hachimanzaka, which had caught my interest on the first day. I enjoyed a relaxing moment in the calm atmosphere, with the aroma of coffee and the gentle sweetness of pumpkin cake soothing my senses.

For lunch, I savored a burger from Hakodate’s famous “Lucky Pierrot.” I ordered the Lucky Cheeseburger, fries, and chicken. The portions were generous, and the taste was outstanding! Indulging in a bit of junk food while traveling is always exceptionally delightful.

Finally, I had dinner at “HAKOYA Hakodate Airport Terminal” inside Hakodate Airport and took the 7:30 PM flight to Haneda. I arrived back in Tokyo by 9:00 PM.

Summary
The trip to Hakodate was filled with spectacular views, gourmet food, and rich history! Every moment was surrounded by delicious food and beautiful scenery, making for a very satisfying 3 days. Next time, I hope to enjoy Hakodate during the cherry blossom or summer season.
Hakodate, which is also the setting for a Conan movie, is a wonderful place to visit, so I hope you all have a fantastic trip!
